Osotimedhin emphasized that poor girls in the remote countryside
have little or no education
often will have the highest chance of marrying at a young age.
Girls who marry too young
will face many life threatening health effects
such as pregnancy and childbirth.
The lack of birth control knowledge and methods
risks the catching of sexually transmitted diseases
including AIDS, from their husbands who are often older.
During a recent press conference,
to publicize this report,
Archbishop Desmond Tutu,
South African human rights campaigner,
demanded an end to the forcing of young girls to marry.
